NOTES ON UPCOMING EVENTS

(9/22/03)

1.             SERVICE PATROL – SEPTEMBER – PIRANHA.  The Service Patrol for the Month is the Cobra Patrol.  Each member of the Service Patrol must stay after the meetings for approximately 15 minutes to sweep, mop, neaten and otherwise clean up Scout Hall (including the bathroom) after each meeting during the month. Please notify your parents that you will be a little late this month.

2.             AVIATION AND FAMILY LIFE MERIT BADGES.  We will be working on the Aviation and the Family Life Merit Badges at our meetings during the next couple of months.  If you are interested in working on either of these two merit badges, please sign up now.  However, sign up for Family Life Merit Badge is limited to those who have a rank of Second Class or higher.

3.             SCOTT WARREN EAGLE COURT OF HONOR – SEPTEMBER 28.  Scott’s Court of Honor will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 28.  All Scouts and their families should attend this program to celebrate Scott’s achievement. Scouts should wear Class A uniform and should bring a snack to share at the reception after the ceremony.  More details to follow.

4.             BOARD OF REVIEW – OCTOBER 2.  Sign up for your Board of Review AFTER you have completed your Scoutmaster’s Conference.

5.             CAMP SIKORSKY WEEKEND – OCTOBER 3, 4 & 5.  The following are attending this weekend trip:

                J. Anania               E. Pfann                 M. Stephan           P. Kratzman           Mr. Anania

Mr. Stephan          Mr. Kratzman        J. Coursen             Mr. Pfann

Each attendee now owes $50 for this weekend.  Please get your money and your permission slips in immediately.  More details to follow.

6.             GREENBAR MEETING –OCTOBER 9.  The Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, Scribe and all Patrol Leaders (or their respective designees) will meet at Scout Hall at 6:45, before the regular Thursday night Troop Meeting, to plan the next month’s program.

7.             CAMPOREE – OCTOBER 10, 11 &12.  The Fall Camporee will be held at Deer on October 10 – 12 (this date has been changed from the dates listed in the Council Calendar).  The theme of the program will be “Roughin’ It” and attending Scouts will be able to earn the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge.  In addition Scouts below the rank of First Class will be able to learn and have advancement requirements in the areas of First Aid abd Outdoor Activities.  Life and Eagle Scouts who already have the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge are invited to assist in the instruction of that badge.  I am hoping for a big turnout by our Troop at this event, so please sign up now.  More details (including the cost) to follow.

8.             OCEANOGRAPHY MERIT BADGE – OCTOBER 13.  Monday October 13 is a School Holiday.  We have arranged (through the work of Mrs. Fulton) on that day to go to the Norwalk Aquarium and spend the day in the Aquarium and on board its Research Ship in the Sound learning about the Sound and earning the merit badge.  This is an outstanding opportunity and the first time that the Norwalk has ever given a program for the Boy Scouts.  The trip will cost $5 per person.  We are limited, however, to 30 people, of which at least 4 must be adults.  I am assuming that all of you will want to attend, so it will be a first come first served situation.  So please sign up and get your money in right away to reserve your spot on this trip.

9.          COMMITTEE MEETING – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15.  There will be a regular monthly Committee/Parents Meeting in Scout Hall at 7:30.  All Parents are encouraged to attend.

10.          BACKPACKING/CABIN CAMPING TRIP – NOVEMBER 15 & 16.  This is a fun campong trip to introduce everybody to backpacking.  We will backpack our personal gear about three milea into the campsite.  The troop gear and most of the food will be brought to the campsite by car.  At the campsite, those that need to sleep in a tent for either Tenderfoot or second class advancement, for camping merit badge or for the Year-Round Camper Award may do so.  Others may sleep in a Cabin.  More details to follow.

11.          2005 JAMBOREE.  I know that it sounds early, but those that are interested in attending the 2005 National Jamboree need to sign up as soon as possible.  Mr. File has applications which are due (along with a non refundable $150 deposit) on November 1.  While it may be possible to sign up later, this is a first come first served event.  So if you don’t sign up early you may not be able to attend.  Adults can also volunteer to attend, and the Troop has decided to pay the fee of any adult that attends.  Anybody interested should speak to Mr. Van

12.          YOUNG EAGLES.  The EAA Aviation Foundation, an international aviation membership association, is sponsoring a “Young Eagles” program to try to get 1 million children between the ages of 8 and 17 to fly in a small plane before December 17, which is the 100th anniversary of powered flight.  Mr. Rose is a licensed pilot (formerly a commercial pilot) who owns a Cessna 4 seat airplane.  He is a member of EAA and is willing to give a plane ride to any of our Scouts and sign them up for the Young Eagle program (which includes some training about aviation and aviation safety as well as the flight).  Any Scout participating will get a Certificate and the thrill of a small plane ride as well as learning something about aviation.  We have a number of hand-outs about the program and anybody interested should get in touch with Mr. Rose directly.

13.          2005 PHILMONT HIGH ADVENTURE TRIP.  Mr. Marshall will be leading a group of Scouts on a high Adventure week-long backpacking trip at the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico in July 2003.  This is an outstanding opportunity for the Scouts of Troop 82 to experience the wonders of backpacking in the wilderness with a team of Adults and boys that know each other and work together well.  Mr. Marshall will also need another adult to go with him on this trip.  Any adults and Scouts interested should speak to Mr.  Marshall.
